Othello

I am wondering if y'all think Iago has a similar internal struggle as Dorian Gray. They both create chaos, and I wonder if Iago is immune to it, or if he like Dorian has some kind of internal turmoil. Looking forward to reading a lot more of the play this weekend!

  1. I don't think that Iago has a similar internal struggle as Dorian Gray. Even though they both create chaos, I think that Iago is immune to it. I think that Iago has been evil since Othello promoted Cassio and not him. Iago's progression into evil was very different than Dorian Gray's progression. This is because Dorian Gray was influenced, and Iago was just flat out mad that he didn't get promoted and that hate towards Othello made him evil.

  2. Okay, yeah I definitely understand what you're saying. I was just wondering, cause after class when we discussed that there could be and probably is a lot of backstory that we as readers don't know, I started thinking about it.

  3. Yeah, I'm not sure if they are similar because Dorian was influenced by Lord Henry, where Iago is fueled by his hatred for Othello. When you say Iago is immune to it what do you mean?

  4. I think that Iago is more similar to Lord Henry because he seems to be the main instigator of trouble. He is always influencing people to help him, which most of the time is not a good thing. Iago is most of the time in the center or attention and he is definitely the controller of most everyone. He is very clever, the way he is trying to get everyone on his side, when in reality he's against everyone. However, maybe he does have some internal conflicts like Dorian.
