Satan-Heroic?

In the reading, we see that Satan has not given up the battle with God, here Satan exemplifies the motive that has been rooted in our heads: always pick yourself up when you fall down. For Satan, he has fallen down hard, to the pits of Hell, and God is against him yet he has not lost his motivation to regain his power. In fact, he is optimistic about getting revenge on God. He even brags “What though the field be lost?/ All is not lost; the unconquerable Will, / And study of revenge, immortal hate,/ And courage never to submit or yield:” (Book I, Lines 105-108). This can be confusing for readers as we are so inclined to root for Satan to ‘pick himself back up’ but we have also been taught that Satan is the root of all evil.

  1. See if your opinion of Satan changes. Do you feel sympathy for him or feel that he is justified?

  2. READING 4
I don't find Satan so heroic anymore. I find him to be very over confident, selfish, and talkitive.
My thoughts. Satan is not heroic mainly because he takes advantage of people by dragging them down and putting them in his army against God for his desire to regain HIS glory. He is sneaky in the way he attracts people to follow him into Hell and then making the army appealing because suffering alone isn't fun for eternity. His humanizing factors make him look weak because he cannot control his moods. Why must he cry instead of getting excited and pumped up when he sees all of his "men/support"? Satan does not seem heroic or frightening, but like a barbie doll trying to manipulate others to follow her and get revenge on someone who hurt her feelings. Satan is still part good because he can cry and feel remorse. He is still partically God's top angel.

    QUESTION:
"...but his face/ Deep scars of Thunder had intrencht, and care/ Sat on his faded cheek..." (bk 1 lines 600-603). What or who does Satan care for?

  3. Satan is over confident in his army's ability to fight. He is selfish for dragging innocent men into Hell. Satan has been giving a lot of talk to encourage his army which goes hand in hand with his confidence.
I don't like Satan. He is very strange.

  4. I don't think Satan cares for anyone except himself. He sees everyone else as pawns he can use to his own ends. He calls the "round table" to try and convince his minions that they are important when he has already made up his mind. More than anything, he wants power or at least to be considered significant.
