Emilia vs Iago
In class today we talked about how Emilia really had no intention of giving Iago Desdemona's hankerchief (at least the real one). There is no way that she could have thought he was going to do anything good with the hankerchief. I think Emilia just wants to see the good in everyone. She believes that Desdemona did not cheat on Othello. She does not realize that her own husband is incredibly evil. She, unlike Iago, wants everyone to be good and nice, while Iago goes out of his way to see everyone in a negative light. Emilia is almost the complete opposite of Iago.

I think that the reason she originally planned on making a copy of the handkerchief was because Emilia knew Iago was up to no good. The only problem is that she did not have the chance to make the copy. I wonder what would have happened if Emilia had given Iago a copy of the handkerchief?
ReplyDeleteDoesn't Emilia say something in a very short soliloquy about trying her best to do whatever it takes to please her "wayward husband"? Any insight there? What Emilia knows and doesn't know has always interested me. Let's look for clues in little comments on the text and in the movie. Note how she reacts when she finally puts two and two together. She seems quite genuine there, to me at least.
