Heart of Darkness, presence of evil

In the Heart of Darkness discussion paper, Coach Crook told me to blog on how I believed the jungle represented evil. I said that the jungle is the abstract villain that changes good and pure men into evil sinners upon enterin the jungle. What do y'all think about that. Especially Lani. A little birdie told me you would disagree....

  1. Haha yes I did disagree. I think the jungle represents man's degeneration into his natural state. We discussed in class about how order is only temporary, so I thought that what man views as evil isn't necessarily evil. The chaos of the jungle is only natural, and civilization deems it as something devilish.

  3. If evil was equal to improvement then yes I would agree with that. However since (in my opinion) civilization has improved since the times when we lived like barbarians in the jungle, doesn't it make sense for the chaos of the jungle to be evil? It might be natural but natural isn't always good.

  4. Ah,"natural isn't always good." Very interesting. Let's take this back to Paradise Lost and basic Christian belief. God is the creator of everything. Everything that God creates is good. Whatever God creates is "natural," the way He intends. Therefore whatever is natural is the way God intended it. So, if "natural isn't always good," could God have intended something that isn't good? I'm just saying....
